GEO and AEO: what actually changes in practice

GEO and AEO are not synonyms. AEO works on extractability: making an answer liftable from a page. GEO works on citability: getting a generative engine to pick you as a source while it builds the answer. The first is a content-form problem, the second one of authority and entity consistency.

What does AEO actually mean?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It describes the work that makes a single piece of information liftable from a page without the system having to interpret too much. It is a problem of form: where the answer sits, how independent it is from the context around it, how easy it is to tell which question it answers.

The fastest test is this: take a paragraph from your page, detach it from everything else, and read it alone. If it still means something precise, it is extractable. If understanding it requires having read the previous three sections, it is not. Most corporate pages fail this test, not because the content is wrong, but because it was written to be read in sequence by a human scrolling from the top.

So AEO acts on very concrete elements: headings that state the question instead of announcing the topic, direct answers in the opening lines of a section, figures placed in a table rather than buried in a sentence, definitions that fit in one line, units and currencies spelled out, visible dates. None of this requires authority. It requires editorial discipline.

What does GEO actually mean?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Here the problem is not the shape of the answer but the selection of the source. When a generative engine builds an answer, it picks a narrow set of documents to lean on. GEO works on everything that influences that selection: entity clarity, consistency of signals across sources, presence in the places the engine actually looks, and the existence of material that answers the specific question.

The difference matters. You can have the best-structured page in your category and still not get picked, because the engine does not recognise you as a relevant subject for that question. Conversely, you can be cited with a badly written page if you are the only one holding that figure, or if third-party sources name you often enough to make the association obvious.

GEO therefore reaches beyond the site. It covers how your name is written elsewhere, whether public profiles say the same thing, whether independent sources connect you to the topic, whether your address and contact details are identical across every property. These are signals no paragraph-level edit can produce.

Where do they overlap and where do they diverge?

They overlap on one point: both need the page to be accessible and comprehensible. Content a crawler cannot reach is neither extracted nor cited. Past that, the two disciplines demand different work, from different people, on different timelines.

Why does the distinction change the plan of work?

Because it moves the budget. If the problem is extractability, the intervention is editorial and closes in a few weeks: rewrite the pages that matter, put figures in tables, add direct answers, fix the structured data. It is demanding work but predictable, and the result shows up on the same pages.

If the problem is citability, rewriting pages is not enough. You can optimise for months and stay out of the answers, because the engine keeps leaning on three industry sources that never name you. The correct plan is different: find out which sources are actually retrieved for the questions you care about, then work so your name exists inside those sources. That means content worth picking up, presence in category roundups and comparisons, consistency across public profiles.

Confusing the two produces the most common waste I see: companies rewriting their site for the third time when the real problem is that no external source connects them to their own market.

How do you tell which problem you have?

You need a measurement that records two separate things: whether you appear in the answer, and which sources the answer used. They are two distinct columns, and the combination tells you where to act.

  • You do not appear and the cited sources never name you: a citability problem. The work is on sources, not on your pages.
  • You do not appear but one cited source is a page of yours: an extractability problem. The engine read you and did not find the answer in usable form.
  • You appear with wrong or stale information: a consistency problem. Somewhere there is a dated version of your data outweighing the current one.
  • You appear and the answer is correct: that question is covered. Move to the next one instead of optimising what already works.

Where do you start if you have both problems?

In most cases you do have both, and the order is not neutral. Start with AEO, for a reason that is not convenience: extractability is a precondition of citability. Earning a citation on a page where the answer is not liftable means wasting it. The engine picked you, found nothing usable, and weighs the source differently next time.

There is a practical argument too. AEO produces results in weeks and depends only on you, so it generates the first evidence that justifies the slower GEO work. Reversing the order means months with nothing to show, and that is the most frequent way these projects die halfway.

The mistake to avoid in either case is starting from the whole site. Take the ten questions that matter commercially, meaning the ones a person asks while deciding whether to buy from you. Fix the pages answering those ten, measure, and only then widen. Work on ten well-chosen questions beats a full rewrite done without knowing which questions exist.

  • First: the pages already receiving citations. Making an answer liftable on a source that already gets picked is the fastest available gain.
  • Then: the commercial questions where you do not appear and your pages are not retrieved either. That work is GEO and it needs new material.
  • In parallel, always: entity consistency. Name, address, contact, and profiles identical character for character. It costs a few hours and influences everything else.
  • Never: rewriting the whole site before measuring. Without a baseline you will not know which intervention moved what.

What does neither one fix?

Neither guarantees appearance. Google has stated that no dedicated markup can secure presence in generative features, and OpenAI describes accessibility to its search crawler as a condition for being shown, not a promise of being shown. Anyone selling guaranteed appearance is selling something the engine vendor says does not exist.

Neither makes answers deterministic. The same question asked twice can produce different phrasing and sometimes different sources. That does not make measurement useless, but it does impose a protocol: stated conditions, repetitions, dates of record. Without those, comparing two measurements means nothing.

Neither replaces SEO. Organic ranking still governs part of the traffic and still influences which documents end up in retrieval. They are two layers of the same presence, not two competing channels.

  • Before acting, separate the two questions: is the answer liftable, and are you the source being picked?
  • Record the retrieved sources, not just brand presence. That is the column telling you where the problem sits.
  • Extractability is solved with editorial work in weeks. Citability depends on sources you do not control and takes longer.
  • Do not promise, and do not accept a promise of, appearance in a generative engine. The work is on controllable signals.
